About us

The Reed Marine Biology club is a student-run organization for anyone who loves marine wildlife, ocean ecosystems, or aquariums. The purpose of the club is to design, create, and maintain a custom saltwater aquarium for the entire Reed community to enjoy, and to chat with other marine life fans in a fun, laid-back, and inclusive environment.

What we do

The club will meet either weekly or biweekly, at a time agreed upon by the group (probably Saturday or Sunday!) During our first meeting of the semester, we will get to know each other, and plan out the creation of our beautiful custom aquarium, including what ecosystem we want to emulate, what species we want to include, etc. When we have a solid plan, we will spend our meetings constructing our communal aquarium! After its completion, meetings will be an opportunity to chat and hang out with our marine critters while performing some basic tank maintenance. Group members will sign up for a time to complete daily maintenance like feeding, approximately 10 minutes per person per week.

What we might do

Additionally, during our first few meetings of the semester, the group will vote on how the club will spend its time and resources.

Some possibilities include:

  • Trips to the Oregon Coast

  • Tide pooling trips

  • Organizing guest speaker events related to marine sciences

  • Marine conservation volunteering

  • Trips to local aquariums & museums

  • Hosting aquarium care seminars for the Reed Community

  • Specialty aquariums or paludariums

  • Making mason jar ecospheres

  • Anything else you may think of!

Our world's Oceans are filled with incredible beauty and complexity, and Oregon is an amazing place to witness some of it. It would suck to go four whole years at Reed without experiencing that beauty.
